The California Jail System

There are 165 California jails in the state's 58 counties with a rated capacity of 84,269 beds. The California jails population in 2005 was 82,138 individuals incarcerated. The Board of Corrections establishes California jail standards and conducts inspections, but does not have enforcement authority.

The California Prison System

The Dept. of Corrections & Rehabilitation manages 33 prisons, 37 camps, and 12 community facilities across California. The inmate count was 161,349 in July, 2011. The Department's budget in FY 2010 was $10.6 billion, with staff of 63,050. In May 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered the state to reduce the population in their 33 prisons to 137.5% of their design capacity. There were 143,000 inmates in those facilities in June, 2011 (179% of the design capacity of 79,858). Population reductions were ordered to be complete by May 24, 2013.

The Community Corrections System

In 2009, 58 county probation agencies supervise 312,046 adult probationers. Funding comes primarily from county governments and offender fees. The Parole and Community Services Division of the Dept. of Corrections & Rehabilitation supervised 106,035 parolees.
