The Colorado Jail System

There are 55 jail facilities in the state of Colorado. All are operated by sheriff's offices except Denver. Facilities range in capacity from 6 to 1,900 inmates. The Colorado jails inmate count in 2005 was 13,638. There is no state oversight of jails.

The Colorado Prison System

The Dept. of Corrections operates 22 facilities in Colorado. The state contracts with 4 private prisons, and was responsible for an inmate population of 22,860 in June 2011. The FY 2011 budget was $730 million. There are appoximately 6,750 employees in the Department.

The Community Corrections System

At the end of 2009, 22 judicial district probation offices, funded and coordinated through the State Court Administrator's office, supervise 78,114 probationers. The Dept. of Corrections' Division of Adult Parole supervised 11,655 parolees. The Dept. of Public Safety administers a Community Corrections Act.
