The Maine Jail System
Maine has 16 counties and 15 jail facilities with a rated capacity of 1,387 beds. The jail population was 1,545 in 2005, which is much lower than some of the surrounding states. The DOC conducts inspections and enforces Maine jail standards. In 2009, state legislation was passed to provide some state funding for local jails and placement of some state prisoners in local facilities (which is a little different to think about).
