The Massachusetts Jail System
There are 18 jail facilities in the Massachusetts 14 counties with the state jail population formerly at 12,619 inmates in 2005. The state Dept. of Correction inspects jails and enforces standards of compliance across all Massachusetts jails.
The Massachusetts Prison System
In March 2011, 11,388 inmates were housed in MA Dept. of Correction's 17 facilities and a pre-release center. The agency budget in FY 2009 was $520.4 million, with approximately 5,000 employees.
The Community Corrections System
The Office of the Commissioner of Probation with the state judicial branch provided supervision to 180,677 probationers at the end of 2009. Field staff of the MA Parole Board supervised 3,365 parolees at that time.
