The Virginia Jail System
Virginia has 95 counties and 76 jail facilities, and the state jail population was 26,424 in 2005. The state Dept. of Corrections inspects jails and enforces compliance with jail standards.
The Prison System
The Dept. of Corrections managed 30,388 inmates in May, 2011. The agency operates 30 institutions, 6 work centers, 4 diversion centers, and 3 detention facilities with a staff of 12,490. The agency's FY 2010 budget was $985.6 million.
The Community Corrections System
The DOC's Community Corrections section supervised 55,645 probationers and 4,605 parolees at yearend 2009. The unit is organized into 4 regions and 42 district offices.
