The Arizona Jail System

There are 15 counties and 50 jail facilities in Arizona with an estimated inmate population of nearly 48,000 in 2005. Most facilities are operated by sheriff's offices. There is no formal Arizona jails inspection programs currently provided in the state.

The Arizona Prison System

In June 2011, the Arizona Dept. of Corrections housed 40,181 adults in 10 state facilities (6,500 of those inmates were in privately-operated facilities). There are approximately 9,756 employees in the Department.

The Community Corrections System

At year end 2009, probation agencies under the state Superior Courts in each county supervised 78,243 probationers. The Dept. of Corrections supervised 8,209 adult parolees.
