The Michigan Prison System

Michigan's state prison population peaked in March, 2007 with 51,554 inmates. The Dept. of Corrections housed less than 44,000 inmates in Feb., 2011 in 34 state facilities. The agency's funding for FY 2012 is slightly over $2 billion, with15,656 employees. Due to state budget problems, 12 state correctional facilities have been closed since 2007. In 2008, the state spent 22.1% of its general funds on corrections.

The Community Corrections System

175,131 adults were on probation at the end of 2005. Felony cases are supervised by the Michigan DOC's Field Operations Administration. The FOA supervised more than 50,000 probation cases and 24,374 parole cases at the end of 2005. The DOC also administers the Michigan Community Corrections Act.
