The South Carolina Jail System
There are 46 counties and 51 jail facilities in the state, and the state jail population was 12,226 inmates in 2005. The SC Dept. of Corrections inspects jails and enforces compliance with jail standards.
The Prison System
The Department of Corrections managed 23,050 inmates on July 23,2011. The agency operates 28 facilities and had 5,589 employees on June 30, 2010 (694 short of authorized staffing levels). The agency budget for FY 2010-11 was $344.7 million.
The Community Corrections System
The SC Dept. of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services supervised 39,688 probationers and 1,612 parolees at the end of 2009.
